If I wasn’t as passionate as I am as an early childhood educator, I would have probably chose a different path as my career due to the challenges Taylor speaks about in the chapter “For Love or Money”. Not so much because teachers are losing their “creativity” but because I’m beginning to wonder if what I make as a teacher will potentially lead to making a “good living” and paying off my bills. It’s a constant struggle for me because I truly love what I do but it’s been difficult to be financially stable. When I mean struggle, I do not struggle in trying to figure out a different career path. I have no doubt in my mind that I am in the right field because every day that I walk in to my classroom I am happy and I am also fascinated by the intelligent minds of young children. However, to be able to support myself, and potentially to create my own family, I might need more financial support, which I consider my struggles and an early childhood educator.

On the other hand, I do not think that teachers are losing their creativity. I am currently working as a preschool teacher at the CUNY Graduate Center, Child Development and Learning center. At our center we as educators are committed to providing a play-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood education for the children of Graduate Center students. Art is an important and integral part of our daily curriculum. It is a fun way for children to create and represent their ideas. We believe that through art children express what they know and how they feel. In our center, art is never demonstrated by a teacher. It is open-ended and entirely the result of the child’s endeavor. The children show their creativity while we provide a variety of materials for children to experiment with. Choosing the materials is where we get to be creative, and creating the art is the children’s creativity. Some may think that providing the appropriate materials is not enough to show the teacher’s creativity however, this is an important role to increase children’s natural curiosity while helping them gain knowledge.

On page 18 paragraph 2, Taylor uses the term digital feudalism in the concept of our information being “sold” to the social media. In addition, the two terms “techno skeptics” and “new media cheerleader” are quiet opposite from each other. Techno skeptics is the idea that companies should pay the users for sharing private informations with the media. In contrast, new media cheerleader is the idea that because the users already know the terms and regulation prior to creating the account, users should know that the information being shared is open to everyone to see.

The concept of digital feudalism may seem like a way to protect our privacy, however the protection of our privacy seems almost impossible if one is signing up for anything related to “social” media. After all, sharing our information is what companies are getting their profit from and eliminating that would not benefit the companies.

Hello everyone! My name is Marisa Chung and our group had a chance to discuss about the Trebor Scholz’s Digital Labor. During our discussion, we all agreed that Facebook makes their enormous amount of profit in numerous ways. Whether it is by advertisement, collecting our data, or simply by tracking our interest, we are being sold as the “product” as it is mention in the article. We focused more on advertisement because we believe that other companies pay Facebook to advertise their product so that we, Facebook users, can see it and purchase the items. Our likes and interests is what our advertisement “feed” consists of. Facebook can be a great source to keep in touch with people all over the world but it unfortunately comes with a lot of baggage.

The reality is that we as the “products” being sold” are aware of this situation but continue to use it regardless because of its convenience. The buying and selling of data complicates the way we differentiate between work and leisure because Facebook no longer becomes a social networking website where it allows users to interact with others during their “spare time”. Everything has become business related which in many ways seems unfair. Facebook claims to be “free” but it really isn’t.

Best,
Marisa
